SUHAIMI Hj Ibrahim defeated over 268 golfers to clinch the Challenge Trophy for the Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Charity Golf Tournament yesterday.

The prize giving ceremony was held at the competition venue and present as the guest of honour to give out the prizes was His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.

Suhaimi carded an even-par 72 last Sunday to finish ahead of Hj Shahminan Hj Damit, who was two shots behind at the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club in Jerudong.

Johari Hj Ahmad bagged third with his score of 76 for the Oct 28-30 competition.

Suhaimi, a former national golfer who represented the sultanate at the 2005 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the Philippines, never saw it coming.

“I didn’t expect to win. I came to play just to enjoy,” said Suhaimi after the prize ceremony.

“I also hardly play here and it was very tough. But maybe that day I had more confidence and that’s why I could play well,” added the 51-year-old.

Bakhtiar DP Hj Yahya won the net category with a score of 64. Faez Hj Ahmad was runner-up on 66 while Hj Raya Dollah was a further shot back.

Other winners include Hong Kok Seng (Division A Net), Hj Momin Shawal (Division B Net), Pg Hj Ibrahim Pg Hj Othman (Division C Net), LTC Zahrin Hj Zunaidi (Senior Gross), Alias Duraman (Senior Net), Deputy Minister of Development Dato Paduka Hj Suhaimi Hj Gapar (VIP Gross) and Deputy Minister of Defence, First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Mohd Tamit (VIP Net).

It was the first time in the tournament’s history that a hole-in-one prize was handed out after Hj Jamain Osman aced the third hole.
