Man faces up to 7 years’ jail for stealing $100

A LOCAL man pleaded guilty to stealing $100 from the staff house of a restaurant in Kg Sg Hanching last month after having been released from prison less than three months.

Ak Abd Malek Pg Idrus, 23, made the admission during yesterday’s proceedings before the presiding Magistrate Hjh Ervy Suftriana Hj Abd Rahman.

He had been a passenger in a another person’s car on the way home on the night of October 3, 2016 along Jln Muara when they both decided to stop by Mamih Restaurant.

The defendant then alighted from the car while the driver drove around the vicinity to find a parking spot.

The defendant proceeded to the first floor of the building above the restaurant which was the staff quarters of the business.

Finding the front door unlocked, he proceeded to enter the rooms inside and found a bag containing valuables belonging to a restaurant employee.

He then took $100 and returned to the car where he gave the driver a $20 portion of his loot.

They then drove to Kg Pengkalan Sibabau where they spent $10 of the stolen money on fuel and the rest on purchasing drugs.

Investigations by the police following a report lodged by the theft victim then led to the defendant’s arrest on November 1, 2016.

In his mitigation yesterday, the defendant pleaded for leniency and expressed regret over his actions.

The presiding magistrate then adjourned the sentencing to tomorrow afternoon where the defendant will be facing up to seven years’ imprisonment with an unspecified amount of fine for the offence under section 380 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22.
