A MALAYSIAN man who was caught offloading 180 coconuts while transiting was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine or serve four months in prison after pleading guilty to the offence.

On October 30 this year, customs officials detained drivers of two vehicles suspected of violating customs transit rules when they saw them offloading the coconuts in the vicinity of Pasar Tani in Sengkurong.

During an investigation, one of the drivers, 30-year-old Mohd Fazli Liaw, admitted that he had made two sets of customs transit declarations at the Labu Control Post for two vehicles that declared fruits which were intended for transit from Lawas to Miri, Sarawak.

Mohd Fazli further admitted that he knew that offloading transit items in Brunei is an offence under the Customs Transit Rules.

According to the court document, the value of the seized items was $144.

Following the proceedings, the court ordered that the coconuts be seized by the government.
