Minister attends Asian disaster risk reduction meet

MINISTER of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong yesterday attended the Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016 in New Delhi.
Themed “Risk Sensitive Development for Community Resilience”, the AMCDRR 2016 was hosted by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs with the cooperation of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
Officiated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the conference saw the attendance of ministers responsible for disaster risk reduction in Asia.
In his statement at the ministerial plenary session, YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Abu Bakar highlighted Brunei’s continuous commitment in supporting disaster risk reduction initiatives in the region, particularly through the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
The minister then reiterated Brunei’s concern on climate change, especially in mitigation and adaptation measures, and highlighted the importance of shared commitments and close cooperation in capacity building and disaster resilience for peace and stability in the region.
YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Abu Bakar also attended the launch of the ‘One ASEAN One Response’ declaration yesterday. The declaration, which showcases ASEAN’s capacity and capability in responding to disasters in ASEAN as well as outside the region, was signed by the ASEAN leaders during the 28th ASEAN Summit on September 6 in Laos.
YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Abu Bakar also held bilateral meetings with delegation heads from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
During the meetings, they discussed collaboration to further strengthen bilateral cooperation as well as explore new areas of cooperation in disaster management and disaster risk reduction.
Also in attendance at the conference was Brunei’s High Commissioner to India Dato Paduka Hj Sidek Ali, Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs Hj Abdul Mutalib Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Mohammad Yusof and Acting Director of the National Disaster Management Centre Abdul Rahim Hj Ismail. — Amanda Yap
