AF to hold French Bruneian arts festival

ALLIANCE Francaise (AF) de Brunei will be holding the first ever week-long French Bruneian Arts Festival beginning November 12.
Speaking during a press conference, the new director of AF, Yann Carpentier, said the festival will feature artwork from local artists as well as French pieces alongside screenings of French language movies.
“The festival aims to build ties between people from all walks of life in Brunei and to promote the cultural diversity in Brunei by working together, not just to promote the French culture.
“The Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism is a very strong supporter of the event, and we’re thankful for his help and to the Minister Of Home Affairs as well for approving our event,” he said.
The owner of Rainforest Gallery, Dato Shofry Abdul Ghafor, said during the press conference that the festival will allow Bruneians to admire the work of local artists through their paintings.
“Sometimes the problem (for arts) in Brunei is that we lack the exposure needed, so I’m extremely delighted that AF is working with us to promote local artists at the same time,” he said.
“With this upcoming festival, we will again have the space and platform to show to the Bruneian public that there are artistic talents to be proud of.”
The event, which is being sponsored by Baiduri Bank and Total, will feature vintage French movie posters alongside paintings by seven local artists that will go on display at the Rotunda of The Empire Hotel & Country Club.
There will be three French language movies screened with English subtitles throughout the festival. The movies will also be screened at Times Cineplex and at AF’s office on Jln Batu Bersurat.
Each movie screening will cost $8 per person, but a $90 package will offer unrestricted access to all aspects of the festival. The exhibition at The Empire Hotel & Country Club’s Rotunda is open to the public for free.
Tickets to the movie screenings, opening ceremony and closing ceremony dinner can be purchased through the AF office at Unit 1, Simpang 68 of Jln Batu Bersurat, Rainforest Gallery and at the car-free Bandarku Ceria event tomorrow in the capital.
