Year 8 topic on smoking to include dangers of vaping
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
THE Ministry of Education (MoE) is collaborating with the Ministry of Health to revise the current topic on smoking carried in the Science syllabus.
In a working paper presented by MoE’s Curriculum Development Department (CDD) and the Health Promotion Centre (HPC), it said that the revised topic will be taught to Year 8 students nationwide next year in hopes to raise more awareness on the dangers of smoking.
Additional information will include the harmful effects of e-cigarettes and “vaping”.
The revision is in line with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah in conjunction with his 67th birthday where the monarch raised concerns over a large number of smokers being parents.
To accomodate the revision, a two-day workshop began yesterday which saw the participation of 64 Science teachers from 32 schools in Brunei-Muara and Temburong districts.
Hj Shamsulbahri Hj Muhammad, head of CDD’s Science Unit gave a welcome speech and talk on the revised topic.
The workshops are a platform where teachers and health officials can share the latest updates as well as activities and effective teaching methodologies.
A similar two-day workshop will be conducted on November 10 with a group of 36 science teachers from 18 schools in Tutong and Belait.
