OVER 60 Bruneian youth from all four districts gathered yesterday for the first District Youth Exchange Programme organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) in conjunction with the 11th National Youth Day.

The programme is scheduled to run from November 2 to 4 and is held at the Sports Village of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex.

Shahrinah Hj Abd Rahman, assistant chief of the District Development of Youth and Sport Department of MCYS said that the programme aims to bring together youth of various backgrounds from the four districts to bond and celebrate National Youth day.

She said that the programme also aims to cultivate a strong sense of responsibility, as well as a positive and healthy mindset, among the participants through team building activities, community service and site visits to the Association for Children with Special Needs (KACA) and the Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER).

In preparation for their visit to KACA and SMARTER, the participants attended a talk yesterday delivered by SMARTER President Malai Hj Abdullah Malai Hj Othman.

The president spoke about the founding of SMARTER, the challenges faced by people with special needs and explained how to understand their point of view.

The participants, as part of the programme, will visit mosques to conduct cleaning campaigns and prayer sessions.

They will also attend Islamic seminars and the National Youth Day celebration that is held today at the International Convention Centre.

Of the participants, 16 are from the Brunei-Muara District, 15 from the Belait District, 25 from the Temburong District and 7 from the Tutong District.

According to Shahrinah, the programme initially aimed to gather 100 participants but was not able to do so due to the exam season and short time frame for registration.

Registrations were only opened to the public last week.

She however said that there are plans to organise and conduct the event annually.
