UNIVERSITI Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) will offer a new bachelor’s degree in tahfiz and qira’at in the 2017/2018 academic year as the programme had been approved by the Senate and council, its rector said.

In a recent interview, Dr Hj Norarfan Hj Zainal said the new programme aims to produce tahfiz (individuals who are able to memorise all 30 chapters of the Quran) and graduates who are skilled and knowledgeable in qira’at or methods of Quran recitation.

“UNISSA already has lecturers who are experts in qira’at so we are ready to offer this new programme,” he said.

Currently, the Aliyah Qira’at Diploma Programme is offered at Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

The diploma programme was introduced in 2010.

The rector said the undergraduate programme will offer the institute’s ‘Aliyah Qira’at’ diploma graduates an option of furthering their studies in the same field.

“Some of the diploma graduates were able to pursue their studies in Egypt and Malaysia under government scholarships. However, from our observations over the years, some of the graduates (who were not able to further their studies in Egypt or Malaysia) ended up pursuing their studies in other fields such as Usuluddin and Arabic language because a degree programme was not offered (locally),” he said.

The new four-year programme will be offered under the Faculty of Usuluddin, Dr Hj Norarfan said. Applicants must be able to memorise at least 15 chapters of the Quran before they can be accepted into the degree programme.

Under the three-year diploma programme, students are trained by a huffaz or guardian.

The programme covers modules such as Quran studies and Arab language as well as a subject on Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).
