TEN participants from religious schools nationwide competed in two categories of the 53rd Tafsir Al Quran Oratory Competition yesterday.

The annual competition is organised to educate, nurture and harness the talents of students in the oratory field as well as to produce prospective Daie or Islamic Propagators.

Winning first place for the male category was Muhammad Noor Fauzan Azizi Mazne from (BSM) PJN Pg Hj Abu Bakar, religious school in Mumong.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Muhammad Noor Fauzan Azizi said he did not expect to be able to win first place after not being able to even qualify for the finals three years in a row.

“I thought I’d get third place but when my name was not announced for the consolation prize and the third and second place, it felt amazing especially since I only had five hours of practice as I’ve been busy with exams.”

Muhammad Noor Fauzan Azizi said he wrote the material himself which was titled ‘Nabi Muhammad Model Insan Terbaik’ (Prophet Muhammad SAW is a good model).

“I believe I had the advantage as I wrote it myself and understood everything and have a love for history.”

Second and third place winners went to Irma Muhammad Qamarul Syafiq Hj Matussin from Pelambayan Religious School and Muhammad Qamarul Hamizan Minor Absah from Tumpuan Religious School in Telisai, respectively.

Winning first place for the female category was Nur Syifa Haziqah Hussaini from Pelambayan Religious School.

Nur Syifa Haziqah said she was excited when she was announced as the first place winner especially since it was the first time ever that she had taken part in the competition.

“I practised for two months leading up to the final competition, using a text that was written by one of the teachers from my school.”

Nur Syifa Haziqah delivered the topic ‘Kebersihan Teras Kesejahteraan Ummah’ (Cleanliness is the core of the Well-being of the Ummah or community).

The second and third place winners were Nur Syahindah Juzailah Shamsul Bahrin from the Penanjong Religious School and Wafa Batrisya Rusli from the Pengiran Anak Puteri Majeedah Nurul Bolkiah Kilanas Religious School, respectively.

Present to hand over the awards to the winners was the guest of honour, the Head of Human Resources Development and Scholarship, Islamic Studies Department of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) Ustazah Hjh Mardiana Hj Leman.
