TWO toastmasters from Brunei nabbed first prize at the Toastmasters District 87 Semi-Annual Conference 2016.

Pooja Shivanand from The Brunei Speakers’ Club (BSC) won the Speech Evaluation Contest where she and other contestants had to evaluate the test speaker, a fellow toastmaster from Kota Kinabalu Advanced Club Sylma Jepin.

Pooja said that skills such as listening, being analytical and good time management are the key to becoming a good evaluator.

“You need to be very good in these three. You also need to have a very clear structure in your evaluation process. Once you have the structure, then it becomes easy for you to evaluate,” she said.

“More than anything is to practice... Practice makes perfect.”

Meanwhile, Allen Ang Boon Kiat, vice-president education of Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club, took home the Humorous Speech 2016 winner title with his entertaining speech, ‘My dream job’.

In an interview with The Brunei Times , he said that his speech is aimed at pointing out how everyone is a born salesman but the term ‘salesman’ has been viewed negatively.

“When you are trying to propose to your wife, you are actually selling her a future. As an employee, you are selling to your boss for a promotion,” he said.

“Salesmen are under appreciated. We should appreciate them more because at the end of the day, they are also working hard for their family,” Allen said.

The toastmasters said they had to improve themselves after every round of contests that they had won.

Both also credited their mentor, Stuart Lee, for his guidance throughout their preparation. Stuart was the champion for District 87 Humorous Speech 2013.

The runner-ups for the Speech Evaluation were Donna E Tan and Yusuf Chandra while the Humorous Speech runner-ups were Irene Widjaya and Dunstan Chan.

The conference was held at Rizqun International Hotel and attended by 170 people who comprised of toastmasters from Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia; teachers and students from government schools and members of the public.

The next District 87 Toastmasters International Annual Conference 2017 will be held on May 19 until May 21 2017 at Pacific Sutera, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
