A LOCAL man was sentenced to three years in prison and three strokes of the cane after he was convicted for stabbing a man last year.

Sahminan Mohd Ranih claimed trial on the charge of causing grievous hurt on 48-year old Mahdini Hj Mustapa by stabbing the victim on his left hand and left arm on November 23, 2015.

Mahdini, who was among eight witnesses called to give evidence during the trial, told the court that Sahminan had suddenly attacked him and stabbed his left arm and left hand with a knife. At the time of the incident, there were four other people in the room.

The victim further said that he doesn’t know why Sahminan attacked him nor did the defendant say anything to him during the attack

Initially, Sahminan’s defence was that he was not in the right state of mind during the incident.

However, the defendant retracted his statement and stated that he was at his sister’s house when the alleged attack took place. He claimed that the prosecution witnesses who allegedly saw him attack Mahdini had all colluded against him. The defendant, however, did not call any other witnesses to support his testimony. In her verdict yesterday, Intermediate Court Judge Dk Hjh Norismayanti Pg Hj Ismail found Sahminan guilty due to the overwhelming evidence against him, particularly the four credible witnesses who saw the incident.
