TWO men were fined $4,000 after they admitted to possessing untaxed cigarettes.

Mohamad Yaakub, 25, was fined $2,500 for possessing seven cartons of untaxed cigarettes, while co-accused Awang Hassan Awang Badarudin, 23, was fined $1,500 for possessing four cartons of cigarettes.

The court document stated that on September 25 this year, both men were brought in for questioning after customs officers at the Kuala Lurah Control Post found cigarettes in the trunk of the car driven by Mohamad.

Both men admitted that the cigarettes belonged to them. They bought them from a shop in Limbang, Sarawak. These cigarettes, according to the men, were for their personal consumption.

The excise duty for the cigarettes, which both men had neglected to pay, was $540.

Following the proceedings, the court gave Mohamad and Awang Hassan a grace to pay the fines or serve the in-default imprisonment term of two months and one month respectively if fines are unpaid.
