Youth groups collect donations for over 200 families
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
OVER 200 families have received public donations as part of a charity drive organised by the youth groups of Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah.
The mosque’s Syababurroja Youth group and Muslimah group continued distributing donations in the form of daily necessities to 50 families yesterday following an overwhelming public response.
Ustaz Hj Haris Hj Suboh, chairperson of the charity drive, said the good response resulted in an extension of their charity work, which started last month.
He said the charity programme was initiated by the two groups as a shared social responsibility towards the needy and less fortunate people.
“It aims to alleviate the burden of families, help individuals who lost their homes to fire at Kg Ayer, aid those who are differently-abled and the elderly, and provide assistance to the public who want to donate,” he added on the sidelines of the donation handover ceremony at the mosque.
He said the charity programme was meant to end in about two weeks, but had to be extended due to the overwhelming public response.
To date, more than 500 members of the public have stepped forward to donate daily necessities such as rice, sugar, cooking oil and cleaning supplies.
“Providing assistance to those in need is something that is encouraged in Islam and it is a social responsibility that should be shouldered by all members of the community whether it is done individually or in a group,” said Ustaz Hj Haris.
“It is an honourable act and surely, all of these acts will be rewarded by Allah SWT,” the chairperson added.
The two youth groups have thus far reached out to the Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts.
According to a statement issued by the groups, they are due to head to Temburong to conduct their charity work there next month.
Present to hand over the donations yesterday was Assistant Director of Mosque Affairs Department Ustaz Hj Amir Hisyam Hj Masri.
