A GROUP of students from IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus and Politeknik Brunei have banded together to develop a series of promotional events to boost visitorship to Brunei museums.

Under the name of Brunei Patriots, the group of eight students on attachment have used a carnival styled concept to host vendors offering entertainment, education and food within the compound of museums.

They hosted their first event titled “Bersiuk-siuk Dengan Warisan Kitani” (Have fun with our heritage) at the maritime and Malay technology museums in Kota Batu at the start of the month.

This weekend, the group plans to bring the fun fair concept to the beach front location of the Belait District Museum to draw families and other visitors from around Brunei.

The Belait museum has received 300 visitors in its opening two months, a number considered modest by its manager, but pales in comparison to sites in Brunei-Muara.

“The museum just opened in July and more needs to be done to improve public awareness of it, since it doesn't have the look of a typical museum,” said Brunei Patriot chairperson Siti Nur Nabilah Hidayatullah Asimah Faris Idris in reference to the fact that the museum was a house occupied by the assistant British resident.

“However its location — facing the beach — is advantageous. We plan to bring in ATV vendors, flying fox and bouncers.”

The group will also showcase two films on Saturday evening from the Museums Department covering the history of Brunei, highlighting the discovery of oil, Kampong Ayer and community birthday celebrations of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The event will start at 10am and end at 9pm on Saturday, before continuing the next day from 10am until 4pm. The group is also bringing an assortment of local games including pasang, congkak, salok-salokan and simban.

The chairperson added that seven of the eight students developed the promotion as part of a three-month attachment under their HNTec in Travel and Tourism course at IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus.
