91 vie for spots in Quran competition semi-finals

NINETY one contestants are competing in the four-day preliminary rounds of the 57th National Al-Quran Adult competition for a spot in the competition’s semi-finals.

Out of the 91 contestants, 68 are qari (male Quran reader) and 23 qariah (female Quran reader).

Forty-three of the participants are participants representing their respective mosque zones and 47 are the finalists of last year’s 56th National Al-Quran Adult competition.

One participant is also a former champion of the Quran competition who had not competed in the last 10 years.

The competition is an annual event organised by the Ministry of Religious Affairs. This year, it is organised by the ministry’s Islamic Eminence Development Section, Mosque Affairs Department and Kampung Belimbing Subok mosque committee members.

The participants are required to recite selected verses and they are judged based on their tajweed (the knowledge and application of the rules of recitation and articulacy), rhythm, fasahah (fluency) and vocals.

The verses are from Surah An-Nisa, Surah Al-Maidah, Surah Al-Anam, Surah Al-A’Raf, Surah Ar-Rad, Surah Ibrahim, Surah Al-Hijr, Surah An-Nahl, Surah Al-Isra, Surah Al-Kahfi, Surah Al-Hajj, Surah Al-Mu’minun, Surah Al-Furqan, Surah Saba, Surah Qaf, Surah Adz-Dzariat, Surah At-Thur, Surah Al-Hasyr and Surah Al-Mulk.

The competition will continue today until October 27 from 8am to 4.30pm at Kg Belimbing Subok Mosque.
