A TWENTY-YEAR-OLD woman was ordered remanded yesterday for non-appearance at a trial before the Intermediate Court three months ago.

Norazatul was due to appear at the Magistrates’ Court in July after she claimed trial to charges of extortion and wrongful confinement of a 29-year-old man last year. She is also facing a charge of soliciting for the purpose of prostitution by having sex with the victim for $100.

During the proceedings yesterday, prosecuting officer Siti Nurjauinah Hj Kula informed the court that Norazatul was arrested on Friday at a house in Kuala Belait.

When asked by the court, Norazatul said she didn’t turn up for the trial that day as she had gotten the date mixed up and wasn’t properly informed.

Intermediate Court Judge Hj Nabil Daraina PDH Badaruddin rejected her explanation, saying she had attended court hearings before.

He said the defendant had absconded as she disappeared without a trace, forfeiting her bail.

Norazatul was ordered to be remanded at Jerudong Prison until October 26, when the trial resumes.
