Mosque theft defendants to appear at High Court

TWO men accused of stealing from a mosque will be charged at the High Court after the case was remitted from the lower courts yesterday.

Fadly Farzuan Awang Muda is accused of stealing a safe deposit box containing $42 from the Lorong 3 Selatan Mosque in Seria on October 18 this year. The 31-year-old is also facing a charge of causing damage to the safe deposit box.

The penalty for stealing from a mosque is 10 years in prison and an unspecified number of whippings.

Co-accused Abdullah Mukhlis Khalid, 29, is facing a charge of assisting Fadly Farzuan in concealment of stolen property, namely by running off with the safe deposit box.

Both men have been ordered to be further remanded pending the next mention of the case on November 3 if an earlier date at the High Court hasn’t been confirmed.

In another case heard at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday, two men accused of theft at a house in Kg Ayer were each released on $3,000 bail.

Abdul Malik Fazil Mohammad, 19, and Muhd Sumardey Hj Abdullah, 18, are facing a joint charge of stealing a 52-inch flatscreen television from a house in Perumahan Kg Perintis in Kg Peramu on August 4 this year.

The court document further stated that on August 15 this year, Muhd Sumardey went to the same house and stole two gas stoves.

On October 17, Malik Fazil is also accused of smashing the rear passenger window of a Suzuki Alto that was parked at the Sungai Lampai Fire Station in the capital.

A further mention of the case is scheduled for November 1.
