THE Magistrates’ Court yesterday imposed a $28,000 fine on a local man after he was found guilty yesterday for possessing over 60 cartons of untaxed cigarettes.

Customs officers found defendant Mohammad Hisam Awg Mustaman, 28, in possession of 68 cartons of untaxed cigarettes at his home in STKRJ Bukit Sibanging on September 1, 2012 and inside two cars there.

During the proceedings yesterday, Mohammad Hisam’s proposal to pay the fines on a monthly installment of $200 was rejected by the court as it would take the defendant 11 years to settle the fines.

The presiding magistrate instead ordered Mohammad Hisam to pay the fines within an eight-month grace period or serve 14 months in prison for in-default of payment.
