A LAW student from Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM), Ainur Rabiatuladawiyah Hassim, was adjudged the best presenter during the student debate competition held at the broadcasting complex of state broadcaster Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) in Sungai Akar yesterday.

The opposition team, composed of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) students Muhammad Raziq Raziqin Abdullah and Siti Nurul Iman Md Dan and UIAM students Luqman Long and Ainur Rabiatuladawiyah, won the competition.

On hand to present the trophies were Deputy Permanent Secretary at Brunei’s Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism Wardi Hj Mohammad Ali and Senior Secretary (Management) at Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Dato Samsuni Mohd Nor.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Ainur Rabiatuladawiyah said although she had participated in several debating contests, this was the first time she competed abroad.

“This is an eye opener. It’s different from the competitions I have participated in Malaysia, not only about the format of the contest but also the way our Bruneian counterparts express their thoughts,” she said.

She hoped that the contest will be continued in the future.

The student debate contest was the first recording programme collaboration between RTB and Malaysian public broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), which is known as “MoU RTB-RTM Debat Siswa”.

The programme, which was the first of its series and hosted by Brunei Darussalam, will be aired later by RTB and RTM.

Participated by students from different universities of both countries, the programme, among others, aims to improve the students’ articulation and thinking skills using Malay language in public speaking.

Each country was represented by four participants comprising two female and two male students. They were divided into two teams — proposition and opposition. Each team comprised two Bruneians and two Malaysians. This year’s topic was “ASEAN as a destination for eco-tourism in diversifying the economy of the country”.

Also present were RTB Director Hj Muhammad Suffian Bungsu, RTM Deputy Director of Current Affairs Section Zainab Yusof and other government senior officers.
