ASPIRING teachers were encouraged to enrol at University Brunei Darussalam’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education (SHBIE), which promotes “active learning” through its Project ‘Maritah Berdudun’.

Project advisor Pg Dr Hjh Nur-Ashikin Pg Hj Petra, who is also a lecturer at SHBIE, said that a sequel to the project launched last year was continued this week.

“For last year’s project, the students had made their reports and we found out that they continued to bring this (project) along into their teaching career where they create their own projects to engage students, which received encouraging responses,” said Pg Dr Hjh Nur-Ashikin in a recent interview.

She explained that active learning is part of 21st century learning, mainly focusing on information technology with emphasis on students’ understanding, she said.

“We are training teachers so they would know what to do. All courses under SHBIE involve a high level of active learning,” she said, stressing that there is a great demand for active learning among students.

“It is like charging and recharging. The teacher trainees should be active as they would later on become examples for their students, or role models. If they are active while under teacher training, they will produce students who are active in the same sense,” said the project advisor.

This year’s project involved the students creatively interpreting and showcasing their understanding of funeral rites.

It carried theme Tuntutan Fardhu Kifayah: Kesedaran dan Kefahaman (The obligation of Fardhu Kifayah: Awareness and Understanding).
