THE 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brunei Darussalam was commemorated at a reception at the Presidential Lounge of Rizqun International Hotel in Gadong last night. Russian Ambassador to Brunei Vladlen Semivolos said 2016 was a “special year” considering the “increased intensity of high-level exchanges” and significant growth in bilateral trade between the countries.

The bilateral trade between Brunei and Russia in 2016 reached more than US$50 million, up from US$25 million recorded last year, he said.

The increase was due to the energy ties between the two countries, he said, adding that other areas including biotechnology, transport and infrastructure offer opportunities for the development of mutually beneficial projects.

“It is our common view in both Russia and Brunei that the establishment of direct ties between business circles of our countries will help serve this goal,” he said.

The envoy highlighted the numerous collaborations between both countries this year, including the participation of Russia’s Pacific Fleet at the ADMM Plus Maritime Security and Counter-Terrorism Exercise held in Brunei.

Semivolos also talked about the memorandum of understanding on cooperation signed by Russia’s Minister of Culture and his Bruneian counterpart.

He said it was “a good platform for building up bilateral exchanges in the field of culture and art”.

The ambassador said there would be more collaborations to enhance science and educational cooperation between both countries. “Currently negotiations on two important documents are being finalised — the memorandum of mutual understanding between the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Education of Brunei Darussalam on cooperation in higher education and science as well as intergovernmental visa waiver agreement,” he said.

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman and his spouse also attended the function.
