STUDENTS of Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (Maktab Duli) won the first prize of the Group Storytelling Competition 2016 organised by the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP).

Their counterparts from Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School and Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Damit Female Secondary Religious School won the second and third prizes, respectively.

Guest of honour DBP Acting Director Hjh Nortijah Hj Mohd Hassan presented mock cheques to the winners during a ceremony at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports’ Digadong Hall. The first prize was $600, second was $500 and the third prize was $400.

She also presented gifts to the judges and certificates of participation.

The judges were Universiti Brunei Darussalam Malay Literature lecturer Mohammad Zefri Mohammed Zain Ariff, DBP Senior Language Officer Suip Hj Wahab and DBP Children’s Coach Hj Pawi Hj Tajuddin. They were selected based on their experience in the acting profession.

Apart from following the theme “Bangsa Membaca Bangsa Berjaya”, contestants were marked based on story plot, interpretation and technicality in performance.

“These aspects complement each other, they cannot be separated, and they should be treated as a whole,” Mohammad Zefri said in an interview with The Brunei Times.

He added that the contestants’ marks were also influenced by their ability to connect these aspects together to communicate their messages successfully to the audience.

“The performance should invoke feelings from the audience. The response and how the audience understand the ideas (of the performance) are important,” he said.

The three schools were selected out of 17 schools and clubs on the first round.
