THE Ministry of Education (MoE) welcomed the new Islamic Year 1438 Hijrah yesterday at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) with the theme Harta Berkat Negara Selamat.

In attendance as the guest of honour was Education Minister Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.

The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah by Ustaz Mohd Rasidi Hj Sulaiman, followed by a speech from Dr Hj Hambali Hj Jaili, director of the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPUSB) Language Centre.

In a speech based on “_Orang berhijrah ialah siapa yang meninggalkan segala yang dilarang _Allah (SWT)” (or ‘Observing Hijrah by shunning away from what Allah SWT dislikes’), he explained the need to replace bad deeds and intentions.

“When one is about to commit a sin but then decided to leave that sin, that action is then considered as a good deed,” he said.

The speaker also emphasised the importance of maintaining relations with people, particularly one’s parents.

“If you fail to look after your parents in their old age, you will not live a blessed life no matter how great your achievements are,” he said.

Dr Hj Hambali advised Muslims to continuously strive for self-improvement for the sake of Allah SWT through self-reflection.

“If we do so, Allah SWT will always bless us in this life and the hereafter,” he said, adding that Muslims should emulate the actions of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

After the speech, YB Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi presented Dr Hj Hambali with a gift. The minister then received a gift from the ceremony’s chairperson, Nadia Lee Siew Hoon Abdullah.

Present at the event were Deputy Minister Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar and Vice Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Datin Dr Hjh Anita Binurul Zahrina POKLW DSS Hj Awg Abdul Aziz.

Also in attendance was Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) Associate Professor Dr Hj Azman Ahmad and other ministry officials.
