YAYASAN Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) yesterday donated $3,450 to a family of ten who lost their home to a fire at Kg Lorong Dalam, Kg Ayer, earlier this week.

YSHHB Managing Director Hj Brahim Hj Ismail presented the financial aid to Bolariffin Abdul Ghani/ Bolghanikan, the head of the family, at the YSHHB Headquarters yesterday.

It was previously reported that the Fire and Rescue Department determined the fire — which began in a bedroom — to be caused by damaged and old wiring, and that the estimated cost of losses was $12,000.

According to Bolariffin, the family has been staying with a relative since the incident.

During yesterday’s event, YSHHB also presented donations to two non-government organisations — the Brunei Darussalam Association of Writers (ASTERAWANI) and the Brunei Darussalam Women Graduates Association.

ASTERAWANI Head I Associate Professor Ampuan Dr Hj Brahim Ampuan Hj Tengah received the donations on behalf of the organisation.

According to a YSHHB statement, ASTERAWANI will be holding the sixth Brunei Writers’ Meeting next month, in collaboration with the Language and Literature Bureau.

Themed ‘Lively Arts During His Majesty’s Era’, this year’s Brunei Writers’ Meeting will focus on discussions on the development of literary works and native writers during His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s rule from 1968 until the present.

The meeting aims to provide an opportunity for Bruneian writers to gather, interact and exchange views about current issues in the fields of literature, language and culture, as well as to improve relations and cooperation between fellow writers.

Brunei Darussalam Women Graduates Association’s president, Pg Hjh Zabaidah Pg Hj Kamaludin, received the donations from YSHHB.

The association will be spending part of the donations on its upcoming International Islamic Conference for Women, which will be taking place this month at the International Convention Centre.

The conference aims to increase knowledge and awareness of the various forms of challenges faced by young Muslimahs, towards excellence and an exemplary community and country in the future.

Both local and invited international speakers will be presenting at the conference.
