A FAMILY of 10 received a donation of $2,000 yesterday from the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) after losing their home in Kg Lorong Dalam, Kg Ayer to a fire on October 5.

During a ceremony at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Acting MUIB Secretary Hj Abd Aziz Hj Akop handed over the zakat money to the head of the family, Bolariffin Abd Ghani.

In a statement, MUIB said it hopes the donation will help alleviate the family’s burden and that the family will be more careful and vigilant in the future as it will help ensure their safety.

The Fire and Rescue Department determined that the fire, which began in a bedroom, was caused by damaged and old wiring and resulted in an estimated $12,000 worth of losses.

Bolariffin said he was thankful for the financial assistance MUIB has provided as well as the assistance from other agencies.

“We lost our house in the fire. That’s a big burden, especially when you have (eight) children. So we’re very grateful and thankful to the ministry for helping us because we need this assistance,” he said.

He said he and his family have received other assistance from the Community Development Department (JAPEM) as well as the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB).

Other than using the financial assistance to help meet his family’s needs, Bolariffin said he is planning to set some of the money aside and use it towards the purchase of a new house for his children.

“Right now, we’re staying with my wife’s relatives in Kg Saba Darat B. But we can’t always rely on staying with others, so in the future, we’re planning to purchase a new house that’s close to our children’s schools in Sg Kebun,” he said.
