MASJID Hassanal Bolkiah Pekan Tutong yesterday celebrated its golden jubilee with a Khatam Al-Quran and tahlil ceremony attended by officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and members of the local community.

The ceremony also honoured more than 50 women and students from the district who had completed the reading of 30 juzuk (chapters) of the Quran.

Attending as the guest of honour was Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awang Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awang Othman.

The ceremony began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by the mass recital of the last 10 surahs of the Quran as well as dikir and tahlil. The event continued with the presentation of souvenirs to around seven imams who formerly worked as mosque officers at the mosque.

The mosque was officially opened by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on August 26, 1966 when he was Crown Prince.

Its current imam, Md Fauzi Hj Anuar, said that since 1966, around 15 mosque officers have worked as imams at Masjid Hassanal Bolkiah. He said Masjid Hassanal Bolkiah was one of the first mosques in Tutong.

“The previous mosque was built close to the riverbank. But (during the Second World War), there was a bombing that destroyed it.”

Tutong has a total of 26 mosques and prayer halls. The Ministry of Religious Affairs is currently building a new mosque in Kg Sengkarai on Jalan Pengasing which is scheduled to be completed on December 2 this year.
