Brunei’s veterans conferred medals of honour

THE Veterans Confederation of ASEAN Countries (VECONAC) yesterday conferred medals of honour for the first time to nine distinguished military veterans in the region.
Among the inaugural recipients was Yang Amat Mulia Pg Sanggamara Diraja Major General (Rtd) Pg Hj Ibnu Ba’asith Pg Datu Penghulu Pg Hj Apong, who was instrumental in forming Brunei’s Former Military Personnel Association in 1973.
The award was in recognition of his efforts in championing for the welfare of military veterans and uniting VECONAC member states.
In an interview during the ceremony, YAM Pg Sanggamara Diraja Major General (Rtd) Pg Hj Ibnu Ba’asith said he was honoured to accept the medal and hoped that it will inspire others to advocate for the welfare of military veterans.
He anticipated the Former Military Personnel Association in the sultanate will grow and strengthen with more people joining the cause.
YAM Pg Sanggamara Diraja Major General (Rtd) Pg Hj Ibnu Ba’asith previously held the post of deputy minister of defence from 1986 to 2005, following his service in the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) from 1960 to 1986.
In addition to the medal, he was also among eight military veterans presented with the title of honorary president for advancing the vision of VECONAC.
“His dedication in the selfless service towards the promotion of peace and stability in ASEAN positively impacted and contributed to a great extent (to) the welfare and lives of veterans in the region,” said the confederation in a statement.
The ceremony was held during the opening of the 29th Executive Board Meeting and 16th General Assembly of VECONAC at the Centrepoint Hotel, Gadong.
First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Mohd Tamit, acting minister of defence, said the recipients were recognised for their commitment and leadership in fulfilling VECONAC’s aspiration to protect and promote the welfare of veterans.
He added the confederation served as a platform for members to expand their contribution in supporting the cause.
The titles of honorary president were presented by First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Abdul Aziz while the medals of honour were bestowed by RBAF Commander Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah.
