MPRT minister attends ASEAN meet in Singapore

MINISTER of Primary Resources and Tourism Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Hj Ali Hj Apong joined his counterparts at the 38th Meeting of the ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry in Singapore yesterday.

The ministry said in a press statement that the ASEAN ministers on Agriculture and Forestry were pleased with the progress and achievements made in the harmonisation of standards of foods, agriculture and forestry products in ASEAN to ensure safe and good quality agriculture production and to facilitate the ASEAN trade of these products.

The ministers, the release added, also welcomed the signing of the Agreement on the Establishment of ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Animal Health and Zoonoses (ACCAHZ).

They also looked forward to the establishment and operations of the centre to provide and facilitate a unified approach and broader framework of regional coordination.

In the area of forestry, the ministers adopted the work plan for Forest Law Enforcement and Governance in ASEAN 2016-2025 and mandated the ASEAN Senior Officials on Forestry (ASOF) to spearhead implementation of the work plan in collaboration with other relevant ASEAN sectoral bodies and international partners.

Meanwhile, in the fisheries sector, the ministers agreed, among others, to strengthen fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance systems; enhance traceability of fish and fishery products; enhance regional cooperation in managing trans-boundary fisheries resources and combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; and address issues on fisheries labour.

The meeting, which was chaired by Singapore’s Minister for National Development and Second Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong, agreed to convene the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Agriculture and Forestry Meeting in Thailand next year.
