THE Women’s Bureau of Kg Sungai Bunga has been teaching youth to make prawn crackers as part of the One Village, One Product initiative to ensure its continuity.

Head of Women’s Bureau Serinah Hj Tarang-Wahab said they have thus far taught two young people to make the prawn crackers to meet public demand.

The 15-member bureau sees an average of 2,000 orders per month with its highest orders being 8,000 for the crackers that are made from fresh prawns.

“I would say that there are five experts in our bureau, including myself, who can make these keropok udang,” said Serinah.

“Now we are in the process of training two youths to ensure continuous production of our products. It would also be helpful in the short term. If any of our members fall sick or are unable to help with the day’s orders, we can enlist the help of our younger girls,” she added.

Serinah said the two youths are currently focusing on their public examinations and are expected to continue helping the bureau.

The head of the Women’s Bureau said their participation would help attract other young people to join.

She also hoped to expand the village’s business. “We do want to expand but we are worried about sending (our products) to shops so they would just be sitting there waiting to be bought. We would rather have our customers taste the keropok udang fresh.

“In the meantime, we do with what we have and hopefully the business can grow,” added Serinah. - Nabilah Haris
