Yayasan celebrates 24th anniversary

HIS Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik attended thanksgiving prayers to commemorate the 24th anniversary of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) yesterday.

The prince, who serves as chairman of Yayasan Committee of Governors, was welcomed to the foundation’s headquarters in the capital by Minister of Education YB Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman, who is also chairman of Yayasan Board of Directors, and Minister of Home Affairs YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awang Abu Bakar Hj Apong, who is Yayasan’s deputy chairman II.

The event began with mass maghrib prayers followed by a recital of Surah Yasin, led by Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Salim Hj Besar.

The congregation also performed mass Isya’ prayers.

YSHHB was established on October 5, 1992 to mark the Silver Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Over the past three decades, its focus has been on improving the quality of life for the citizens of Brunei through various initiatives covering welfare, education, religion, development and finance.

Officials from YSHHB told _The Brunei Times _that, as the foundation approaches its silver jubilee, its focus will be on philanthropy, by providing financial support to local NGOs.

“All the different NGOs work on specific issues, so rather than us creating new projects, we want to support those already on the ground doing the work,” said a senior administration official.

She explained that the foundation wants to change the way it approaches charity and welfare projects and will focus also on programmes that build independence and self-sufficiency in youth.

Also attending the event yesterday were senior government officials including Minister of Religious Affairs YB Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Awg Othman and Minister of Health YB Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Zulkarnain Hj Hanafi.
