OVER 10,000 grocery items as well as clothing have been collected within seven days from members of the public by A mosque youth group from Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah in Kg Kiarong.

The Syababurroja Youth Group and Muslimah Group collected donations from September 25 to October 2 and distributed some of the donations yesterday to 51 less fortunate and underprivileged families — out of which 19 were from Tutong and the rest from Lumut.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, coordinator of the project, Mudim Hj Suhaili Hj Kalong, said they had received an overwhelming response from the public even after the closing date.

“We received around 500 bags of rice, thousands of basic necessities such as canned food and drinks and thousands of clothing for adults and children,” he said, adding that the donations were packed into hundreds of goody bags by youth groups of the mosque.

He said the idea to get donations from the public started when they wanted to help one of their youth members, who recently lost his parents.

“The person lost his parents and he didn’t have anyone to help him buy necessary items for the funeral. A few days after that, we casually collected donations from our members, but the message was circulated in the media and we received a lot of donations later,” said Mudim Hj Suhaili, who is also Mosque Officer at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah.

He said their initial plan to help the orphan had been extended to a charity project to help the poor and destitute families nationwide.

Even though the donation might only benefit them for some days, _InsyaAllah _it will help them get through their burdens and make them aware that everyone cares,” said Mudim Hj Suhaili.

Carrying the theme ‘Mulianya Berbagi’, the project is also aimed at increasing awareness among the members of the public on the importance of helping those who are in need as well as to give an opportunity to everyone, be it non-Muslim or Muslim to donate.

The mosque groups are still receiving donations from members of the public at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah.

The congregants will go to Temburong within a few weeks and the last distribution will be held in Brunei-Muara.
