Khatam to mark anniversary of renaming of capital

THE Ministry of Home Affairs held a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the changing of the capital’s name to Bandar Seri Begawan at Masjid Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien.

In a statement, the ministry said the ceremony yesterday, which was organised by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department in collaboration with the Brunei-Muara District Office, was also held to celebrate the 1438 Hijrah New Year.

A total of 1,486 participants consisting of civil servants, students from universities and colleges, village heads, penghulus, residents and the private sector joined in the recital of the Quran.

The event started with a recital of Surah Al-Fatihah led by the home affairs minister and followed by a takhtim recital.

The khatam prayer was read by Mudim Hj Amran Hj Mohd Salleh while the thanksgiving prayer for the event was read by Begawan Pehin Khatib Dato Paduka Hj Hamidon Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Hj Abd Hamid.

An ustaz from the Islamic Da’wah Centre, Isham Ismail, delivered a lecture during the event.

The ministry said the ceremony was held as part of continued efforts in strengthening Islam in the capital with a positive image, in line with the national philosophy of Malay Muslim Monarchy.

Present as the event’s guest of honour was Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong. — Darren Chin
