Applications open for YSEALI fellowship
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
APPLICATIONS are now open for Bruneians to participate in the Spring 2017 Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellows Programme in the United States.
The US embassy in a statement yesterday said the YSEALI Academic Fellowships are intensive, short-term academic institutes whose purpose is to provide young leaders with a deeper understanding of the US and a particular topic, while enhancing their leadership skills.
The fellowships will focus on one of three themes — civic engagement, environmental issues as well as social entrepreneurship and economic development.
“Each five-week institute will consist of a balanced series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations, and lectures.
“The coursework and classroom activities will be complemented by educational travel, site visits, leadership activities, and volunteer opportunities within the local community,” the embassy added.
The institutes will include an academic residency component of about four weeks and a study tour.
During the academic residency, fellows will have the opportunity to engage in educational and cultural activities outside of the classroom.
Applicants must be between the age of 18 and 25 at the time of application.
They must be a full-time undergraduate student from college, university, or other institutions of higher learning, or have graduated in the past four years.
Applicants must also demonstrate interest, knowledge, or professional experience in civic engagement or social entrepreneurship and economic development, the embassy said.
US Ambassador to Brunei Craig Allen described YSEALI Academic Fellows as “a fantastic learning experience for any young person from Southeast Asia to learn ways to develop their leadership skills, network with peers from the region and the United States, and to promote friendly relations between our countries.”
“I have met our YSEALI alumni and their energy, passion, and commitment in contributing to Brunei Darussalam’s and Southeast Asia’s development is commendable,” he was quoted as saying in the embassy’s statement.
The deadline for applications is October 10.
The application form and more information on the fellowship are available on the embassy’s YSEALI page at http://brunei.usembassy.gov/yseali.html. - Rasidah HAB
