THE Syababurroja Youth Group and Muslimah Group of Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah are receiving encouraging response for their Khidmat Masyarakat project, with many members of the public coming forward to contribute.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Mudim Hj Suhaili Hj Kalong, mosque officer-in-charge of the youth section, said the project, themed Mulianya Berbagi (Giving is Noble), aims to collect daily necessities for the less fortunate.

Since the start of the project on September 25, he said they have received numerous amounts of clothes, rice, cooking oil and dry food.

“As of Friday, we have received donations from 130 members of the public who really wanted to do their part in giving to those in need.”

Organised for the first time by the two groups, he said the project came about after taking part in a similar activity.

“We felt that we wanted to do more, that’s when we decided to organise the project.”

Mudim Hj Suhaili said they will be distributing the donations to underprivileged families and individuals in Tutong and Brunei-Muara districts, and will expand to the Temburong and Belait district soon.

The donated clothes will be examined to ensure that they are useable, he said.

“The response so far has been overwhelming and we are grateful for the contributions made by members of the public.”

Mudim Hj Suhaili said due to the overwhelming response from the public, they will be organising a second project soon.

“It is hoped that this welfare activity and community project will continue to help ease the burden of the less fortunate and underprivileged,” he said.

He said the community should not solely rely on help from the government.

“Volunteer groups should also step up and do their part to help the less fortunate and underprivileged,” he said.

Mudim Hj Suhaili said other items that the public can contribute include rice, sugar, flour, cooking oil, detergent, kitchen towels, dishwashing liquid as well as plates and glasses.

The contributions can be handed to the mosque’s secretariat of the Muqaddam and Quran classes’ administration section.

Mudim Hj Suhaili said donations can be made from 9.30am to 4.30pm until October 4.

The donations will be distributed to the less fortunate on October 5 with the help of the Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) and village heads, he said.

“It is hoped that the donations will help ease the burden of the recipients. May Allah SWT also bless those who have contributed,” he said.
