Man charged with car theft facing 3 years imprisonment

A MAN was charged at the Magistrates’ Court yesterday for allegedly stealing a car that was parked at a house along Jln Masjid Salambigar in Lambak Kanan.

The 36 year-old defendant, Jimmy Lakai, had the charge read to him for the offence under section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22 before the presiding Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati Hj Abd Hamid yesterday.

He is accused of stealing a red Toyota Cressida saloon at the address in Kg Sungai Orok alongside an accomplice, who has yet to be found by the police, at around 3am on September 23, 2016. However, no plea was taken.

The defendant was ordered then by the presiding magistrate to remain under custody at the central police station in the capital to allow for further investigations to be conducted until October 1 when he is due to appear again in court.

It was not revealed what the defendant’s nationality was during yesterday’s proceedings.

If convicted, the defendant is facing a maximum of three years’ imprisonment with fine for the offence.
