A LOCAL man who was already serving an eight-year prison sentence was handed another three years and nine months’ imprisonment at the Intermediate Court yesterday.

Hj Maswadi Pungut/Ismail, 34, had been sentenced last month to serve eight years in Jerudong prison and six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to 10 housebreaking and theft charges committed in the between October 2015 and January 2016.

The defendant pleaded guilty three days ago to a further four charges of housebreaking and theft committed between March and August this year.

He had committed one of the offences alongside three other accomplices who have all since claimed trial after pleading not guilty.

During yesterday’s proceedings, the presiding Judge Radin Safiee Radin Mas Basiuni handed down the sentence to the defendant and noted that as he was a serial offender, there must be a heavier penalty than the usual sentences meted out in similar cases.

The defendant was handed down a final sentence of 45 months’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane yesterday which was ordered to be served immediately after his current sentence ends.

He had been facing up to a total of 15 years in prison with an unspecified number of strokes of the cane prior to yesterday’s sentencing.
