TWO Kampong Ayer houses were extensively damaged after a fire broke out yesterday morning.

The incident took place around 9am in Kg Burong Pingai Ayer.

Owner of one of the houses, Masnah Tuah, 40, said the blaze started in one of the bedrooms in her house and the flames quickly spread to the rest of the house, including her neighbour’s house. “The flames spread so fast because of the wind,” said Masnah, who has been living in the house since 2009.

She only knew about the fire after her 10-year-old child told her there was smoke in the house. At that time Masnah was in the kitchen, while her husband, Pg Rafae Pg Hj Yasin, 45, was outside of the house and their child was watching television.

Pg Rafae, a retiree, and their child just reached home from a dentist, she said. “We lost all our possessions,” she said, adding that identity cards, passports, some $200 in cash, clothing and school books turned to ashes.

She said when the fire broke out, her other five children were still in school.

Masnah’s family is temporarily staying at her relatives in Kg Burong Pingai Ayer, just a few hundred metres away from her village. “We hope we can get a temporary house to live in and school supplies for my children,” she said with tears streaming down her face. Nobody was at home in her neighbour’s house when the fire broke out.

Commanding Officer of Operation D Branch Nohi Irwan Surkarki Hj Pawi said the fire was put out in 14 minutes, and confirmed that nobody was hurt.

Meanwhile, a fire razed a house in Kg Tungku yesterday afternoon.

State broadcaster Radio Televisyen Brunei reported that seven people who live in the house were unhurt. — (Additional reporting by Syazwan Sadikin)
