A PAIR of Chinese nationals was charged with theft yesterday at the Magistrates’ Court after they were arrested for allegedly stealing from another passenger aboard a Royal Brunei Airlines flight on Sunday.

Peng Jiuhui, 40, and Qin Jun, 28, were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22 yesterday after they were caught allegedly stealing while halfway through the flight from Jakarta to Brunei on September 25, 2016.

Among the items they were accused of stealing were several pieces of gold jewellery and Rp7,000,000 in cash ($735).

No plea was recorded during yesterday’s proceedings before Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati Hj Abd Hamid.

The prosecution applied for both defendants to remain under custody at the Bandar Seri Begawan Police Station for another week as further statements from the defendants have yet to be recorded due to difficulties in finding a translator. The presiding magistrate granted the application but limited it to five days.

The next mention of the case was set for October 4, 2016.
