Brunei-Muara wins Surah contest

BRUNEI-MUARA district was named the overall winner in the finals of the Village Consultative Council (MPK) and Mosque Affairs Committee’s Surah recitation and interpretation competition hosted by the Tutong District Office yesterday.

On hand to present the trophies and cash prizes to the winners was the Minister of Home Affairs, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong, who was also the guest of honour.

The competition was organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) in collaboration with the Tutong District Office and Mukim Ukong in conjunction with His Majesty’s 70th birthday.

Twenty-three participants from four districts took part in the final competition yesterday, with the judging based on their tajweed, melody, understanding and intonation.

Champion in the adult male category was Hj Mohd Asri Hj Timbang from Temburong district with 81 per cent, while Noriah Tuah from Brunei Muara district won first place in the adult female category with 89.25 per cent.

Abd Wafiy Hj Abd Kadiroshman from Tutong district bagged the first place in the male youth category with 92.05 per cent, while Nor Hamizah Aji from Temburong district won first place in the female with 89.75 per cent.

Ahmad Huzaifah Hj Awang Hasbi from Brunei-Muara district won the first place for the male children category with 91 per cent, while Nur’ Amerra Hafeezah Shahraimi, competing for Tutong district, was the champion in the female category with 90.75 per cent.

First place winners under the adult category received trophies and $700, while first place winners for youth category brought home $600 and trophies.

The champions in the children category received $500 and trophies.

Permanent Secretary at MoHA Haji Abdul Mutalib Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yusof also graced the competition.

Acting Tutong District Officer Hj Adnan Hj Adam, in his welcoming remarks, said the competition was held to foster love for the Quran as well as understand the meaning of its verses. It is also held to produce more Quran readers as well as to seek blessings and rewards from Allah SWT.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Abd Wafiy who won first place under the youth category, said that he was happy and grateful for the victory as he prepared for it for over a month.
