Religious services biz plan wins UTB competition

THE finals for Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) Youth Entrepreneurship Competition 2016 yesterday saw a Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali student emerging champion.

During the competition, 15 contestants went head to head, some individually while others in teams, to pitch their business ideas to the audience and a panel of judges.

Hj Md Loqman Al-Hakim Hj Hamdan took first place with his business pitch ‘Al-Huffaz Management’, an event management company that provides expertise for religious events.

The services provided by the company, said the founder in an interview with the media, include the recitation of 30 juzuk (chapters) of Al-Quran during religious events and providing homeschooling to adults and children who wish to improve their Quran reading.

“Through this company, we provide our customers with qualified religious teachers and instructors who are endorsed by the Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) because we want to make sure that the content that we provide is accurate and of quality,” he said.

He added that the main objective of the company was to ensure “zero Quran illiteracy” among Bruneians, adding that the company also aims to address unemployment in the country by only hiring locals.

Hj Md Loqman said that the company currently has 20 teachers, most of whom being students and graduates from the Institute Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

“To those looking to achieve success, my advice is to start with a vision (but) when you start to move forward take it one step at a time and never lose sight (of your vision),” he said.

Hj Mohd Loqman Al-Hakim won a cash prize of $1,250 sponsored by Jati Transport Sdn Bhd and a trophy.

The judges Comprised senior staff from UTB’s School of Business as well as members of Darussalam Enterprise (DARE) including its Chief Executive Officer Soon Loo.

Present yesterday to hand over the awards and certificates to the winners and contestants was the Vice Chancellor of UTB Associate Professor Dr Hjh Zohrah Hj Sulaiman.

Two contestants Khairul Nasran Adnan and Nur Fatin Fa’ezah Rifli were also presented with a special recognition by DARE, being awarded the Best Pitching Award for their business ideas entitled International Borneo Railway System and Animal K respectively.

Also present at the event was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muhammad Abdul Qayyum Pengiran Sura Negara Pengiran Anak Hj Muhammad Bey Muntassir as the Head of Economy and Entrepreneurship Executive Committee.
