THE Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) said yesterday that a message recently circulated on WhatsApp in relation to some of the provisions contained in Syariah Penal Code Order 2013 was not genuine.

In a statement, it said members of the public should never be involved in issuing and spreading unverified and unsubstantiated information. Social media and app users are also reminded not to believe and be anxious about dubious information and to refer to information from valid sources.

“Any person who, whether orally or in writing or by any other means, spreads false reports or makes false statements likely to cause public alarm or despondency shall be guilty of an offence. The penalty is three years imprisonment and a fine of $3,000.”
