RESIDENTS of Mukim Kuala Belait yesterday cut down trees and branches in Kg Mumong that for years had posed a safety hazard to those living in the area.

Around 40 people took part in the operation, including representatives from non-governmental organisations and private companies.

Government agencies including the Fire and Rescue Department, the Municipal Department and the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) supported their efforts by providing manpower and equipment.

Hj Zaini Hj Munir, director of Canang Citra Event Management, who also took part in the campaign, said the initiative was taken to address the longstanding problem of tall trees threatening the safety of several homes in the area.

He said residents had been complaining about the problem to Kuala Belait’s Mukim Consultative Council for the past five years, but it was never addressed.

As a result, he and his friends, including Pg Hj Mohd Yussop Pg Hj Abbas, head of the community welfare unit under the Mukim Consultative Council, decided to tackle the issue on their own.

Those taking part cut down trees and any branches that might cause damage to property in Kg Mumong while also removing remnants of dead trees.

Hj Zaini said he was thankful for those who were willing to help and hoped there could be more such cooperation.

Pg Hj Mohd Yussop expressed similar sentiments, adding that yesterday’s campaign wouldn’t be the last as he was advised by JASTRe to carry it out regularly to ensure the village stays clean. He said more of these operations would be carried out, possibly on a weekly basis.
