A UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam student yesterday emerged the winner of an inaugural English oratory competition themed ‘Islamic Reawakening’ held by Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

Hjh Zulfah Sahlah Hj Abdullah bagged $300 for winning first place with 80 points while UNISSA student Arif Azhan Awang Besar won $200 for second place with 79 points.

A student representing Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College, Siti Nur Liyana Metali, won $100 for third place with 67 points in the speech competition between students from higher learning institutions in the country.

During the speeches, several topics were discussed such as the global rise of Islamophobia after the 9/11 tragedy, the lack of the use of English when spreading Islam in Brunei and the need to strengthen our understanding of Allah SWT.

In his welcoming remarks, Pg Dr Hj Saiful Bahrin Pg Hj Kula, director of the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Languages and chairperson of the event, underscored the importance of delivering speeches.

“As a basic definition, speeches convince, persuade and inform others. The speaker has an opportunity to express and share their passion with others,” he said, adding that speeches have the power to inspire and motivate people.
