THE Counseling and Supervision Services Unit under the Prisons Department and Mukim Sengkurong Youth Volunteers yesterday launched a project to reduce unemployment among former inmates and local youth.

A total of $2,000 in cash, two lawn mowers and a chainsaw were presented to the Acting Director of the Prisons Department, Hj Ismail Hj Murat, in a ceremony at the Community Hall in Mukim Sengkurong by Golden Boon Enterprise and Kien Sing (TAN) Co.

The cash and items will be used to provide grass cutting, tree cutting and pruning and drain cleaning services to the public.

The lawn cutting service costs around $140 per month. Reservation forms will be provided to the public by the Counseling and Supervision Services Unit.

These services are expected to give unemployed former inmates and youth the chance to earn a livelihood, according to Pg Omar Pg Hj Othman, head of the Counseling and Supervision Services Unit.

Pg Omar said the project specifically targets former inmates and unemployed youth so they can learn the benefits of entrepreneurship.

“For time being, we will focus on running a small scale business and only target certain places such as private housing, mosques, schools and commercial premises.

“If it’s successful, the business will be handed over to former inmates who are dedicated and motivated to carry out the duties and responsibilities of this business,” he said.

In his speech during the ceremony, he urged former inmates and youth to come forward and participate in the project by registering at the Counseling and Supervision Services Unit. He hoped the project will be successful in helping unemployed former inmates and youth get jobs.

“I hope this project will be expanded and get support from other former inmates and local youth,” he added.

Present as the guest of honour at the ceremony was the penghulu of Mukim Sengkurong, Hj Musa Hj Tahir.
