THE Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) is looking to double the number of tourist arrivals by the year 2020, MPRT minister said.

“According to our statistics, last year tourist arrival by air was about 218,000. We aim to more than double this to 450,000 per annum by the year 2020,” said MPRT Minister YB Dato Seri Setia Hj Ali Hj Apong in his speech yesterday during the launch of the Temburong Holiday Destination packages at the Ministry’s Setia Pahlawan Hall.

The minister added that Brunei is able to achieve this due to its clean air, low crime rate, beautiful nature and absence of natural disasters making it an excellent choice as a tourist destination.

“All these make Brunei a truly welcoming and rejuvenating experience for tourists,” said the minister.

According to the minister, one objective of the new packages was to promote Temburong as a tourist destination rivaling popular neighbouring destinations such as Phuket, Bali and Langkawi.

“Temburong’s well preserved nature and ecosystem remain as its key selling point as a tourism destination combined with various local ethnicities and cultures; hospitable people; peacefulness; tranquil, clean and traffic free environment which makes Temburong, a well-suited family holiday destination,” added the minister.

Other objectives he mentioned included encouraging local travel agents to actively market tourism products both locally and internationally and to provide a local holiday option to the residents of Brunei.

Developed through a joint collaboration by the Tourism Development Department of MPRT, Temburong District Office and Temburong Tour Operators, the eight 3-day and 2-night Temburong holiday packages feature different activities such as nature walks, kayaking and cultural performances. The packages also include various accommodation options and dining experiences.

Sales for these holiday packages officially began yesterday and are targeted at locals and foreigners for the upcoming December school holiday.

The packages will also be promoted at the upcoming Brunei Travel Fair at The Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong as well as at their website www.bruneitourism.travel and Instagram hashtag #discoverbrunei.

Also present at the event were foreign dignitaries, village heads, airline companies, travel agencies, hoteliers and government officials.
