THE Ministry of Defence (MinDef) yesterday held a religious ceremony for the latest contingent of Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) peacekeepers ahead of their deployment to Lebanon.

Thirty military personnel — led by Major Azhan Hj Ahmad — from the sultanate are slated to join the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission under the Malaysian peacekeeping contingent known as the MALBATT 850-4.

The ceremony at the Bolkiah Garrison surau began with a recitation of verses from the Quran, followed by the mass Asar prayer and Doa Selamat.

In attendance were Deputy Defence Minister First Admiral (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Abdul Aziz Hj Mohd Tamit and RBAF Commander Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Major General Dato Paduka Seri Mohd Tawih Abdullah.

UNIFIL was established in 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Southern Lebanon following the first Israel-Lebanon conflict, restore international peace and security as well as help the Lebanese government resume effective authority in the area.

It is also mandated with monitoring the cessation of hostilities, supporting deployed Lebanese Armed Forces and ensuring humanitarian access to civilians.
