MORE than 400 students of the Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School (SMSAB) in Lambak Kanan yesterday participated in a programme organised by the Department of Information aimed at instilling national values.

SMSAB’s Principal Sia Ai Chin, said the briefing is hoped to teach students Brunei’s history, particularly about the national flag and the meaning behind its every shape and symbol as well as the national anthem.

“We targeted Year 7 and Year 8 students because they just started secondary school and therefore we wanted to instil this knowledge in them so that they can share with their family as well as their peers.”

She hoped the students will realise the importance of knowing the proper way to mount the national flag and the important dates to fly them.

“Through the briefing we also hope it will fuel their spirit of patriotism and Bruneian identity.”

The Year 7 and Year 8 students were briefed by the department’s Assistant Information Officer Pg Hj Zahari Pg Adi on the proper way to mount the national flag as well as the history of the national anthem ‘Allah Peliharakan Sultan’.

The students were also shown a video titled ‘Kibarkanlah Dengan Megah Bendera Negara’ (Fly the Magnificent Flag) and participated in a quiz related to the briefing delivered by Pg Emran Pg Hj Salleh, the department’s field officer.

The programme, which is organised through the Nationhood Section, is part of the department’s mission to instil patriotism in students.
