Showcase of local products to accentuate ASEAN city of culture
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
THE capital is set to host a showcase of Bruneian culture and businesses this week, following the declaration of Bandar Seri Begawan as the ASEAN City of Culture for 2016 to 2017.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Captain (Rtd) Zailan Pehin Dato Mohd Don of the Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DPPMB) said over 62 local entrepreneurs have signed up to participate in the event at the Royal Wharf.
“Brunei has a lot of talented entrepreneurs and we need to promote them. At this event, we will show people how good they are,” he said at the National Archives Building.
Slated to take place on August 25 to 28, the co-organiser explained the ‘Cultural and Local Product Event’ aimed to support the declaration of the capital as the latest ASEAN City of Culture by highlighting the sultanate’s culture and businesses.
“We identified that the ASEAN City of Culture is one of the suitable platforms to support...socio-economic development and entrepreneurship,” he said.
Organised by DPPMB in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department, the showcase will also be held in conjunction with International Family Day 2016 and the ‘Bandar Ku Ceria’ initiative.
While most of the stalls at the showcase have been taken up, Captain (Rtd) Zailan said the organising committee may consider allowing a few more businesses to join.
“This event will be in line with our programme to nurture cottage, nano and micro-businesses towards the development of business cluster, inspire product branding and designer labels...for the local and global market,” he added.
Besides local entrepreneurs, the four-day event will also feature cultural performances by the seven ethnic groups of Brunei as well as from other ASEAN countries.
During the launch of the ‘Cultural and Local Product Event’ on August 25, Captain (Rtd) Zailan said the ministers attending the 12th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Culture and Arts in the country will also pay a visit to the Royal Wharf.
“We welcome everyone to come and find out what our talented entrepreneurs have to offer. Bring your family and friends to the event,” he said.
