THREE secondary school students yesterday left for Vientiane, Laos to represent Brunei at the Seventh Regional ASEAN Quiz Competition.

Aimi Iffah Radhiah Abdullah Zulhilmi of Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, Nurul Hidayatul Najiibah Hj Maiddin from St Andrew’s School and Sayyidina Husain Secondary School’s Siti Hamizah Hj Nordin were selected after winning the national level of the ASEAN Quiz.

The national competition last June was organised to identify the sultanate’s representatives and promote awareness on the culture, political, economic and social spheres of the 10 ASEAN member states.

Speaking prior to leaving at the Brunei International Airport, Hjh Noorhijrah Hj Idris, assistant information officer from Information Department, said the ASEAN Quiz in Laos will kick off tomorrow and end on August 26.

She hopes Brunei will be able to repeat the success in 2014 where Brunei won third place in the Sixth Regional ASEAN Quiz in Vietnam.

She said the Information Department has been active in disseminating information on ASEAN to secondary schools through roadshows.

“ASEAN is one of the topics covered in the Social Studies subject in secondary schools. The roadshow aimed to provide exposure and enhance the knowledge of ASEAN among secondary school students,” said Hjh Noorhijrah, who is accompanying the students to Laos.

The Information Department, through its International Affairs Unit, is the secretariat for the ASEAN Committee for Culture and Information (ASEAN-COCI) sub-committee of information.

The Seventh ASEAN Quiz Regional Level Competition aims to promote the 10-member regional grouping. Each country is allowed to send three representatives for the competition.

The competition is a project under the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information, which seeks to foster the spirit of healthy competition among youth in a friendly quiz on ASEAN cultural, political, economic and social information.

Prior to their departure, Acting Deputy Director of Information Hjh Noorashidah Aliomar handed over the Brunei flag to the team.

She hoped that Brunei representatives will come back with not only success, but also more knowledge on ASEAN.

The students were also accompanied by Hjh Hajidah Hj Abd Wahab, senior education officer at the Ministry of Education.
