70 cyclists awarded for part in HM’s mass cycling event

SEVENTY cyclists who participated in the Riadah Berbasikal Keputeraan 2016’s 70 km bike expedition recently were awarded with certificates of appreciation yesterday for their part in honouring His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 70th birthday.

In a ceremony that was held at the VIP room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, the cyclists were presented with their certificates by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Pehn Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awang Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof.

According to a press statement by the Youth and Sports Department, the cyclists of the 70 km bike expedition consisted of the country’s athletes, cycling coaches as well as members of the Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation (BDCF).

The 70 km bike expedition that took place on August 14 was a symbolic gesture as each kilometer represented the monarch’s age.

The Acting Director of the Youth and Sports Department, Zafri Hj Mohamed said that the Riadah Berbasikal Keputeraan 2016 was full of “significant and historic firsts” as it was joined by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzadin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

“The mass cycling event has proven that sports can lead to unity and peace while also promoting the tourism sector as well a healthy lifestyle,” he said in his speech.

He added that with the success of the cycling event he hoped it would inspire the BDCF to remain proactive and inspired to conduct more cycling events.

Also present during the ceremony was Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Dr Hj Affendy POKSM DSP Hj Abidin and Deputy Permanent Secretary Hj Mohd Noor Jusmin Hj Abd Samad along with senior officials from the ministry.
